Equine Bowen Therapy

Gentle, effective support for your horse’s performance, comfort and wellbeing.

When a horse doesn’t feel quite right, it often shows in small, persistent ways — changes in movement, resistance in certain exercises, a shift in mood or willingness. Equine Bowen Therapy offers a gentle, whole-body approach that works for horses engaged in a variety of disciplines.

Working with light, skilled touch and deep respect for the horse’s nervous system, Kerry supports softer movement, easier posture and a calmer way of going, especially for sensitive horses and those who don’t respond well to more invasive methods.

What Is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is a gentle, hands-on technique that works with the soft tissues and fascia — the connective web that links every part of the horse’s body.

Instead of force or deep pressure, Bowen uses light, precise moves with quiet pauses in between. These pauses give the nervous system time to process the input and begin releasing areas of tension or imbalance.

Because it works with the body rather than against it, Bowen is well suited to sensitive horses, those who struggle with more invasive therapies, and horses whose discomfort shows up as resistance, unevenness or changes in behaviour.

The subtlety of the method is part of its strength: small, skilled interventions can create meaningful shifts in comfort, posture and wellbeing.

How Bowen Helps Your Horse

Bowen can support horses in many subtle but meaningful ways, especially when something feels “not quite right” but is hard to pinpoint. By working with the body’s soft tissues and fascia, it encourages easier movement, clearer communication through the nervous system and a calmer overall state.

Common Areas Bowen Can Address

Movement & Posture

Many horses carry patterns of tightness that affect bend, stride length, straightness or willingness to work. Bowen can help the body release these holding patterns, supporting freer, more comfortable movement.

Tension & Discomfort

Soft tissue tension can show up as resistance under saddle, difficulty on one rein, stiffness through the shoulders, back or quarters, or general unevenness. Bowen offers a gentle way to ease tension and support the horse’s natural ability to rebalance.

Behaviour & Emotional Ease

Changes in behaviour often reflect underlying discomfort or stress. Sensitive, anxious or reactive horses often soften with Bowen’s quiet approach, showing signs of relaxation and improved focus.

Long-Term Patterns & Recovery

Horses with old injuries, long-standing compensations or emotional stress can benefit from Bowen’s whole-body influence. Subtle improvements support greater comfort and confidence over time.

Subtle Signs & Early Changes

Some horses show only small clues that something isn’t quite right — a slight change in expression, a shortened stride, or a new reluctance in work. Bowen can offer support at this early stage, helping to address patterns before they become more pronounced.

For Sensitive or “Tricky” Horses

Bowen is well suited to horses who dislike strong pressure, struggle with conventional bodywork, or become tense in new situations. Its gentle nature allows these horses to relax and respond at their own pace.

Kerry’s Approach

Kerry’s work is grounded in attentive observation, anatomical understanding, and more than thirty years of experience with horses of all backgrounds. She takes time to notice the small cues, like changes in breath, expression or posture, that reveal where a horse is feeling dis-ease. Her approach is gentle but skilled, allowing the body to soften and respond without force or overwhelm.

Every session is tailored to the individual horse, shaped by their history, temperament and current needs. This quiet, respectful way of working helps sensitive or complex horses feel safe, understood and able to release at their own pace.

“When I first treated this horse he was dull in his coat and general demeanour and appeared old for his years. He also had locking stifles on both hind legs, making him very uncomfortable and restricting his work routine. What a difference a few weeks can make. After a course of Bowen treatment this lovely horse was much improved. Not only were his stifles no longer sticking or his legs dragging but his overall posture improved considerably – standing much more square with improved coat condition and top line and so much happier in himself.”

“Both myself and my partner first experienced Bowen on ourselves and couldn’t believe the difference it made to us, we felt the healing power of her hands, you really can!  After now being convinced Kerry did some work on my 17 year old horse Maximus who was lacking energy along with a few other issues.  The difference I’ve noticed in him since having three treatments is amazing, he’s like a different horse- full of life and definitely has his mojo back! I highly recommend her.  Thank you Kerry xx”

”Before Kerry I had never experienced Bowen before and nor had my pony, both now converts!  We have both had the Kerry touch and highly recommend it!   Personally I felt a deep relaxation which with my lifestyle is a rarity, and a feeling of being more centred.  I have found a new sellotape to hold my body together!  Bear (my pony) has to have his nose in everything, and I mean everything, relaxed, the full works!  He had a new level of concentration and now works at a new level; I just need to keep up with him! For people and ponies alike- Kerry is a must”

Before Obe began his Bowen treatment he had been struggling with a number of issues, some old, deep seated ones and others more recent such as a fall a few years ago. Physical and emotional trauma stored in his body for many years is slowly being unravelled, allowing him to move more freely and let go of past trauma and associated behaviours. This photo shows Obe feeling rather full of himself after just one treatment!”
